Two ways to get one
| Option | What you get | Price range |
|---|---|---|
| Steam-ready walk-in shower | The shower is built and sealed for steam, so a generator can be added now or later | Top of $9,800–$24,000 |
| Steam shower in a primary bathroom remodel | Steam shower with body sprays, included in the top package | Within $32,000–$95,000 |
The size of the shower, the generator it needs and the distance to your electrical panel all change the number. You get one fixed price in writing after we see the room.
What makes it cost more than a regular shower
- The generator. It is sized to the volume of the shower and sits nearby in a closet, vanity or attic space, with a water line and a drain.
- Electrical. The generator needs its own dedicated circuit. That means an electrician and a permit.
- Vapor-proofing. Steam gets into places that shower spray never reaches. Walls and ceiling need a membrane made for steam, not only for water.
- A tiled, sloped ceiling. The slope keeps condensation from dripping on you.
- Glass to the ceiling. The enclosure has to close fully, usually with a small vent panel above the door.
- Tile choice. Porcelain handles steam well. Some natural stone needs more upkeep.
Can an existing shower be converted?
Usually not without rebuilding it. An ordinary shower is waterproofed for spray, open at the top and has a flat painted ceiling. Adding a generator to that invites moisture damage inside the walls. If you think you may want steam someday, build the shower steam-ready now. Adding the generator later is then a straightforward job.
Is it worth it?
If you will use it every week, yes. If it is mostly for show, put the money into better tile and glass. Include a bench, since steam is something you sit down for.
We make no health claims about steam. If you have a heart or breathing condition, ask your doctor before you plan one. A steam shower in a primary bathroom remodel takes 3–4 weeks as part of the whole project.
