Answer · Tub to shower

Is tile or acrylic better for a shower in Arizona?

Neither is better for everyone. Porcelain tile is the better choice for a primary bathroom you plan to keep, because it lasts longer and is fully custom. Premium acrylic is the better choice for a guest bath, rental or tight budget, because it costs less, installs faster and has no grout to collect hard-water scale.

Start with the water

Phoenix-area water is very hard, and every shower surface here fights calcium. Acrylic is smooth with no grout, so spots wipe off with a squeegee. Porcelain tile hides spots well, but cement grout lines collect scale. Epoxy grout solves most of that. Natural stone such as marble or travertine etches from hard water and from many cleaners, so we steer people away from it in showers unless they have soft water and will keep it sealed.

Does Arizona heat matter?

Both hold up when installed right. Walls move with big daily temperature swings. Acrylic panels flex a little, so they need solid backing and good sealant at the joints. Tile does not flex, so corners and changes of plane need flexible sealant, not grout. Cracked corners in a tiled shower usually mean someone grouted where they should have caulked.

What to watch for in a quote

  • Acrylic: ask for the brand and panel thickness. Thin fiberglass or plastic kits are not the same product as solid acrylic panels.
  • Tile: ask for porcelain, not soft ceramic, and ask which grout is included.
  • Both: ask what waterproofing goes behind the walls and whether the pan is tested.

What we tell homeowners

Primary bath in a home you are keeping: porcelain with epoxy grout. Guest bath, rental or a home you expect to sell in a few years: premium acrylic. Our tub-to-shower conversions start at $7,900 with acrylic walls and run to $16,500 for large-format tile with full frameless glass. If you are unsure, we price both at the consultation and you choose with the two numbers in front of you.
