How do you keep hard water spots off shower glass in Phoenix?

Squeegee the glass after every shower. That one habit prevents most hard water spots, because spots are the minerals left behind when water dries on the glass. A factory or applied protective coating makes the squeegee work better, and a water softener cuts the minerals at the source. Remove existing spots with diluted white vinegar.

Why Phoenix glass spots so fast

Valley tap water is very hard. It carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. When a drop dries on glass, the water leaves and the minerals stay. Dry air here makes drops evaporate quickly, so spots form after a single shower. Left for months, the minerals can etch the glass surface, and at that point cleaning will not bring it back to clear.

Prevention, in order of what works

  1. Squeegee after every shower. It takes under a minute. Hang the squeegee inside the shower so it gets used.
  2. Get coated glass. Protective coatings make water bead and run off. They reduce spotting and make cleaning easier. They do not make glass maintenance-free, and applied coatings need to be renewed.
  3. Soften the water. A whole-house softener removes most of the hardness minerals. It helps the glass, the fixtures and the water heater.
  4. Run the exhaust fan and leave the door open a little so the enclosure dries.
  5. Aim the shower head away from the glass where the layout allows.

Removing spots that are already there

  • Spray equal parts white vinegar and water, let it sit a few minutes, wipe and rinse.
  • For heavier buildup use a cleaner made for mineral deposits and follow the label.
  • Do not use abrasive pads, scrapers or gritty powders. They scratch glass and strip coatings.
  • Keep acids, including vinegar, off natural stone tile and check the care instructions for your fixture finishes.
  • If the glass still looks cloudy when it is clean and dry, it is probably etched. Professional polishing sometimes helps; otherwise the panel gets replaced.

Choices that help when you remodel

ChoiceWhy it helps
Frameless glassNo metal tracks for scale and soap to collect in
Clear glass with a protective coatingEasier to wipe clean
Fixed panel instead of a doorLess hardware and fewer seals to clean
Porcelain tile with epoxy groutScale has less to grab

Textured or frosted glass hides spots but is harder to squeegee. Most of our walk-in showers, which run $9,800 to $24,000, use clear frameless glass, and we go over glass care at the final walkthrough.
