Is frameless shower glass worth it?

Yes, frameless shower glass is worth it in a bathroom you use every day and plan to keep. It shows off the tile, makes the room feel larger and has no metal track to collect hard-water scale. In a guest bath, rental or tight budget, a framed door does the same job for less.

What you are paying for

Frameless glass is thicker tempered glass, usually ⅜ inch, held by hinges and small clips instead of a metal frame. It is measured after the tile is finished and cut to fit your opening, which is why it costs more and arrives later than a stock framed door.

Why it suits Arizona bathrooms

Hard water is the main reason. The bottom track of a framed door holds water, and in the Valley that means scale and grime in a place that is hard to clean. Frameless glass has no track. You squeegee a flat surface and you are done. Ask for a protective coating on the glass to make that easier.

The honest downsides

  • It is not watertight. There are small gaps at the hinges and door edge. A properly sloped floor and a shower head aimed away from the door handle this, but do not expect a sealed box.
  • It needs solid backing. Heavy glass doors hang from the wall, so blocking has to go in before tile.
  • It shows spots. Clear glass with nothing around it looks best clean. Plan on the squeegee.
  • It adds time. Custom glass is measured after tile, so it is usually the last piece installed.

A good middle option

A single fixed frameless panel with an open entry gives you the look without a door, hinges or seals. It costs less than a full enclosure and there is less to clean. That is what our Better walk-in shower package includes, and the Best package has a full frameless enclosure. Our Good packages use a framed door to keep the price down. Walk-in showers run $9,800 to $24,000.
